26 Weeks Pregnant

The Bump: I'm loving my belly! It's great to have strangers give me well wishes and ask me fun questions. Unfortunately, I'm also feeling the growing pains that go along with it!

24 Weeks

26 Weeks

How Far Along? 26 Weeks
Total Weight Gain/Loss: +18 lbs! It really doesn't feel like I could have gained that much until I see my belly in pictures.
Maternity Clothes: I'm wearing fewer and fewer non-maternity tops and I've outgrown my non-maternity scrubs. I'm looking forward to pulling out my fall maternity clothes!
Baby Related Purchases: I went a little crazy with shopping last month, so I haven't really bought anything lately. But my in-laws, Karen and Doug, brought us our travel system when they came to visit a few weeks ago. Having a car seat definitely makes things feel more real.
Stretch marks: I might not have new ones, but my old ones are definitely stretched to the max!
Sleep: I started waking up again and having difficulty sleeping on my side. Now I sleep with five pillows just to keep myself in the right position! That helps, but sometimes I have to take Phenergan to get to sleep.
Movement: He's definitely an active baby! I love feeling his twists, kicks, and what I think might be hiccups. But I don't love it when he sits on my bladder!
What I miss: Sleeping comfortably and making it through the day without back pain.
Cravings: Fruit and tasty drinks, like Sonic slushes. I also started drinking decaf coffee again after not drinking coffee for years.
Anything making you queasy or sick: Only if I get really hungry.
Gender: It's a BOY!!!
Labor Signs: No
Symptoms: BACK PAIN, heartburn, hot flashes (especially when I get hungry), sleep interruptions. Also, I've had a cold, which has been pretty miserable.
Belly Button In or Out? In
Happy or Moody most of the time: Back and forth, but getting really excited to be so close to meeting our sweet boy.
Worries: Planning to leave work and getting the nursery set up.
Best moments this month: A visit from Michael's parents, finding the perfect paint color for the nursery, and feeling the baby kick all the time.
Looking forward to: Starting the third trimester!
Size of Baby: About the size of a cucumber.
What Baby's Up To: Opening his eyes, sensing light, responding to noises, packing on weight.

Third trimester, here we come!

22-23 Weeks Pregnant

The Bump: In the mirror I still feel like I just have a beer belly/pooch, but in this week's picture I've got an undeniable baby bump!

20 Weeks
22 Weeks

How Far Along? 22 weeks (actually 23 tomorrow)
Total Weight Gain/Loss: +15 lbs! More than I was expecting to gain at this point, but my appetite has actually decreased over the past few weeks. It’s funny - when I had only gained 3 lbs I felt hugely bloated and now I feel almost like my normal self.
Maternity Clothes: I’m still wearing a lot of non-maternity tops, but I’ll be outgrowing them soon. I’m looking forward to cooler weather to allow for a little more variety in my wardrobe.
Baby Related Purchases: Now that we know we’re having a boy I’ve gone a little overboard with buying clothes at consignment sales. And I’ve been working on some fun projects, like dying onesies funs colors, making swaddle blankets, and putting together a mobile from sweet felt animals that my mom made
Stretch marks: I already have them from growing up (thanks, fragile skin!). No new ones, though.
Sleep: Not bad. I do have more difficulty getting comfortable sleeping on my side, but my body pillow is helping some.
Movement: Yes! I felt him kick for the first time in the 19th week and I’ve felt him every day since. I LOVE feeling him bump around in there.
What I miss: Feeling agile. I’ve had a few twinges and pains from turning over in the bed wrong or standing up too quickly. It makes me worried that I’ve done something wrong, but I know I just need to slow down.
Cravings: I’m not really having cravings any more. Although sometimes I use the pregnancy as an excuse to eat whatever sounds good!
Anything making you queasy or sick: Not at all! Yay!
Gender: It's a BOY!!!
Labor Signs: No
Symptoms: Heartburn, back pain, and still peeing like crazy.
Belly Button In or Out? In
Happy or Moody most of the time: The past few weeks have been more stressful than usual, but I’m taking it in stride. And I’m so happy every time I think about our little boy.
Worries: Getting the nursery set up. We have almost 4 months left, but I’ll be antsy until it starts coming together.
Best moments this month: Feeling kicks for the first time, seeing our boy’s nooks and crannies on ultrasound at 21 weeks, feeling like a mom at consignment sales

Squirming on 4D - elbow by his face

Sweet profile

Looking forward to: Passing the 24 week viability mark and acing my glucose test!
Size of Baby: About the size of a papaya
What Baby's Up To: Gaining body fat, developing neurological connections, using most of his organs

It feels great to be more than halfway to meeting my baby boy! I’m excited to get serious about preparing for his arrival.

It's a BOY!!! Our Silly String Gender Reveal

Last weekend my sweet coworkers, Lindsay and Lulu (technically also a Lindsay), gave us the most adorable, and exciting gender reveal party ever!

Me with the beautiful party planners
There were handmade decorations, delicious food, and tons of silly string. Here are some pictures to show off the party goodness:

They planned the food around my cravings:
pizza, egg rolls, fruit, chicken nuggets, and more

The most beautiful dessert table ever

Each guest chose pink or blue beads

An adorable mantel display featuring our baby pictures
and a lamb painting by Lindsay!

Color coordinating with my fellow dietitians

My dad - looking forward to a grandson!

Both sets of grandparents, Uncle Steven, and Tia Beta

Sweet baby gifts
We each picked a can of silly string knowing they'd all
spray the same color

It was so fun to have everyone involved!

IT'S A BOY!

Everyone who voted "girl"

Everyone who voted "boy" - the majority was right!
Here's a video of the big reveal!

It was a great day and a fun way to reveal the baby's gender. I'm so thankful for sweet friends and family who show us so much support!

18 Weeks Pregnant

Not my best picture - it was the end of a long day!

The Bump: My belly is definitely sticking out more than it was a month ago, but I still don't have much of a "bump."
How Far Along? 18 weeks
Total Weight Gain/Loss: +5-12 lbs. My weight fluctuates like crazy!
Maternity Clothes: I'm outgrowing my scrubs and gradually replacing them with a bigger size. Most of my pants and shorts are too tight for me, but my normal shirts fit fine. I just ordered some maternity shorts and linen pants, which will hopefully mean I can stop wearing the same stretchy dresses and skirts over and over!
Baby Related Purchases: I haven't bought anything recently, but we have received some wonderful gifts for our little boy: an adorable bow tie, sweet blanket, Batman Little People set, rubber ducky, shoes, books, and diapers. Also, Michael's mom gave us some of his things from when he was a baby, including his first Christmas sleeper. And my mom cross-stitched an animal afghan for us and made sweet felt animals for me to make into a mobile.

He's going to be a Christmas baby like his daddy!

Stretch marks: I already have them from growing up (thanks, fragile skin!). No new ones, though.
Sleep: Much better! I still wake up to go to the bathroom, but I can always fall back to sleep. I do have the weirdest and most intense dreams ever, though!
Movement: Not that I can feel - hopefully coming soon!
What I miss: Feeling cute in my normal clothes. : (
Cravings: I don't have many specific cravings now, but I absolutely love to eat! I've really been enjoying veggies lately, which is great since I'm getting a ton out of my garden.
Anything making you queasy or sick: I threw up this morning for the second time during pregnancy. I didn't really feel queasy till I lost my breakfast. No specific foods are turning me off, although I do feel kind of sick when I'm hot.
Gender: It's a BOY!!! For some reason we both pictured ourselves with a girl, so we were surprised. But we can't wait to meet our sweet little guy!

Our silly string gender reveal - it was blue!

Labor Signs: No
Symptoms: Lots of heartburn. But everything else has calmed down a little. Thank goodness!
Belly Button In or Out? In
Happy or Moody most of the time: Definitely happy that our boy is healthy so far. I'm a little moody still, but better.
Worries: A great ultrasound at 17 weeks calmed most of my worries.

Our sweet, healthy boy

Best moments this month: our awesome gender reveal party hosted by my coworkers and visits from family
Looking forward to: planning the nursery
Size of Baby: About the size of a large mango
What Baby's Up To: Moving around, hardening bones, listening to noises

I'm so excited that my little boy is growing and I can't believe that we're almost halfway done. I'm thankful to be feeling better and looking forward to becoming a mom!

Cinder Block Garden Update: Summer 2013

Last year I wrote this post and this post about planning and setting up the cinder block garden in our back yard. I love the garden, but I've had to make a few small changes since then to make it work. Things are looking pretty good right now and I want to show it off a little. Plus, I've got some concerns, so if you're a master gardener please keep reading and give me some pointers!

Here's the garden last August

And here it is today

Initially we set up the garden to have interior dimensions of 4 feet by 16 feet. However, our backyard floods terribly when it rains and we needed a way to let out all of that extra water. So I bought a few extra cinder blocks, picked up a shovel, and got really muddy to rearrange things. Now we have a 4x9 bed and a 4x4 bed with a little ditch in between. It drains beautifully.

The other structural change I made to my garden was the addition of trellises for my butternut squash, cantaloupe, and heirloom tomatoes. This excellent post was a huge help to me in putting these together. They used cattle panels (available from Tractor Supply Co.) cut in half as 8 foot tall trellises. I was planning to do that, but found rusty wire mesh for crazy cheap near the cinder blocks at Lowes. I think it's used for pouring concrete, but I'm not really sure. All I know is that it's sturdy, has big holes, and would eventually rust anyway. Perfect! Also, these are a little shorter than cattle panels, which means they barely stick out over our fence. Michael pounded 2x2's into the wells of our cinder blocks, then we secured the mesh to the stakes with zip ties at multiple places. Super easy.

Last year we moved into our house around this time, so we missed out on prime planting season. But after some research I found a Tennessee Extension web article saying I could plant a garden in August and expect a hearty fall harvest. This article lied! Haha. I had no success from my tomato, bean, squash, and collard seeds I planted in the sweltering heat of August. If I had started from plants I'm guessing they might have fared better.

Also, my bright idea of writing on popsicle sticks for garden markers was a total failure. The ink quickly disappeared in the sun.

Oh well... I wanted to set up the garden then anyway so that it would be ready for the next season. And I only planted seeds that I already had on hand. So it really wasn't much of a loss.

The cinder block concept has really worked well. We only have occasional bits of grass pop up and those are easy to deal with. In Memphis when it rains it pours, so it's nice to have everything raised so it doesn't wash away. The wells are really nice for planting herbs and lettuces, although I have more space in these than I could possibly use. And the four foot width is ideal, unless you're short in which case it might be a challenge. All in all, I'm loving it.

This year I was able to start planting in the spring like a normal person, so I went crazy with planning the perfect garden. I used a plethora of websites, the most helpful being http://www.smartgardener.com/. This site is great for telling you when to plant seeds or transplants of each type depending on the weather in your area. It tends to be a little stingy with recommended plants per square foot, so I check http://www.mysquarefootgarden.net/ to figure out how many plants of a certain type can fit in my space. There are a lot of fun planting tips on that site, too.

After failed attempts at transplanting my own tomato, pepper, and eggplant seedlings, here's what I ended up planting:

  • 4 Waltham butternut squash (seeds)
  • 3 Honey Rock cantaloupe (seeds)
  • 3 Black Krim tomatoes (plants)
  • 7 Pic n Pic yellow squash (seeds)
  • 3 Roma tomatoes (plants)
  • 4 Clemson Spineless okra (seeds)
  • 4 Big Early Bell peppers (plants)
  • 2 Giant Marconi peppers (plants)
  • 2 Poblano/Ancho peppers (plants)
  • 4 Ichiban eggplant (plants)
  • Various herbs

I like to squeeze those plants in tightly! While this year's garden won't be as cost effective as I would like due to my seed woes, I'll have a much earlier harvest.

Without further ado, here are some glamour shots of my beautiful bounty in progress:

Peppers of different kinds

My first experiment with okra

Eggplant blossoms are really pretty!

Oregano

Mustard

Dill

Thyme

Roma tomatoes

Yellow squash almost ready to eat

More squash

Does anyone know how I can prevent sad, withery little squashes like the one in the background of this photo? I'm guessing it's from inconsistent watering?

Struggling Black Krim tomatoes

Pesky aphids

My Black Krim tomatoes are the only things that just aren't doing well. Two plants have beautiful, fuzzy green foliage, but aren't producing. Any blossoms dry up and fall off. The third one was barely growing and I had to prune it back due to brown spots (I'm guessing fungus?) on the top part of the plant.

I know they have aphids. Initially an organic insecticidal soap was really effective. But now it doesn't seem to be working for these plants, even though my Romas and other plants are fine. Do you have any tips for dealing with this? Since I'm pregnant I'd love to stay away from heavy duty insecticides. Thanks!

Cantaloupe

Basil

Parsley, sage, and rosemary with

Mint

Tiny butternut! I've got lots of these!

Butternut vines climbing on the right

That's all, folks! I would love to answer any questions you have about my cinder block gardening experience so far. And I would really, really love any feedback you have to make my garden better. Thanks for reading!
